Other premiers urged dialogue with Ottawa over how costs of environmental regulations are passed down. They also say the federal government could help address staffing shortages in the health-care system by streamlining recruitment through immigration.

CTV - Canada’s premiers wrapped their three days of meetings Wednesday with calls for the federal government to sit down with them for a dedicated first ministers’ meeting to discuss infrastructure strategy and funding. Stefanson said the premiers want the dedicated sit-down with the federal government to include talks about strategic infrastructure — including community, economic, and competitive infrastructure — as well as economic trade corridors. Quebec Premier Francois Legault said that infrastructure needs to extend to health-care and housing infrastructure. The last time the premiers met with the federal government was in February to discuss increasing health-care transfers, when the latter tabled a $196.1-billon, 10-year offer. “The provinces can only get so far on our own without the federal partner at the table,” he said.

Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson, who hosted the meeting, said the premiers have asked for a dedicated meeting with the prime minister to discuss infrastructure priorities. The Atlantic provinces in particular raised concerns about incoming clean-fuel regulations, asking Ottawa to offset some of the costs to consumers. She said Ottawa needs to build economic corridors, ports, rail lines and pipelines so that products can get to market. The premiers have also raised concerns about the bail system, asking Ottawa to reform the Criminal Code to prevent crime from repeat violent offenders.
